“2015 is shaping up to be a vintage of opulent, voluptuous wines with real personality and character at the top end.” — Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The Stags Leap District Winegrowers Association’s Appellation Collection is the only Napa Valley wine offering comprised entirely from a single appellation. Designed to showcase the quality and distinctive characteristics of the Districtʼs Cabernet Sauvignon, the Appellation Collection offers wine enthusiasts an opportunity to taste their way through the appellation and experience the regionʼs “sense of place.” These wines are no longer (or never were) available in the broad market. The 2015 Appellation Collection provides a fantastic opportunity to explore the signature power and elegance of the regionʼs wines.
The 2015 vintage was a wonderfully classic year for Napa Valley. Amidst a string of drought years, the season’s dry start led to an early bud break and minimal vegetative growth, which balanced well with the ultimately much lower than average crop yields. The vintage conditions led to low vigor vines and small berries, creating very concentrated, opulent fruit. With lovely summer weather, peppered by some heat events, it was a very early harvest, and the wines are voluptuous with incredible power.

In 1982 after an extensive search for the perfect California vineyard property, Sir Peter Michael purchased a 630-acre parcel just north of Calistoga consisting of volcanic ridges along the western face of Mount St. Helena. The first red Bordeaux grapes were planted a year later, and the legend of the Peter Michael Winery began. The winery is focused on producing world class single vineyard wines in the Old World style that concentrate on depth, balance, elegance and structure.  From the beginning, Sir Peter’s goals were three-fold: “One, the vineyard terroir would be the single most important feature. Two, the wines would be elegant rather than overstated. Three, there would be a hundred-year commitment to the development of a great estate.” Although these goals are evident in all Peter Michael wines, they reach even higher peaks in Les Pavots. This flagship Bordeaux style blend is comprised of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot. 2006 was the third in a string of four exceptional vintages in the North Coast wine growing area.  Each vintage expressed its own personality.
2006 began by displaying tough tannins with a deep structure and hints of beautiful fruit in the background, much  in the style of older Bordeaux. As the next decade began, the tannins softened, and the wine began to blossom in the bottle.  Today, it continues to display a deep structure and layers of complexity.  Extraordinary depth, balance, style and luxurious mouthfeel were all descriptors associated with the vintage as it aged, and Les Pavots expresses these characteristics in classic style. Rated on release by Parker at 96 points and Wine Spectator at 95 points, this memorable wine has continued to develop beautifully in the bottle over the last decade to classic levels expressing the breed of the vineyard and the vintage. The signature of Les Pavots is quite evident in this bottling and truly unique in the world of California’s best wines.  A beautifully etched double magnum and true collector’s prize that is rarely seen.

3.0L 2012 Les Pavots
Valid to 5/31/20
Past Winemasters Honorary Chairman Nick Morlet along with Peter Michael Winery invite two couples to Knights Valley for a memorable two-night stay in one of the winery’s private guest residences.  During your visit to this gorgeous retreat, you’ll appreciate a private wine tasting and vineyard tour.
Also included: a 3.0L of 2012 Les Pavots, the wine that has captured the hearts and palates of wine devotees and collectors.  Rich, complex, balanced and finely structured are all descriptors associated with Les Pavots.  Spanning 23 acres, Les Pavots ascends to an elevation of nearly 1,400 feet.  Merlot and Cabernet Franc grow on the cool upper slopes, while Cabernet Sauvignon grows just below.
Deep dark color with saturated ruby color and vermillion nuance, 2012 Les Pavots reveals a deep bouquet of Cacao powder, fudge cookies, black cherry, blueberry and blackberry, licorice, with nuances of cedar, cigar box, black tea, graphite, vanilla, a stylish ‘garrigue’ touch and black truffle. Extremely full-bodied, the wine offers the same rich, ripe fruit impressions on the palate. This complex wine will age gracefully for two decades and provides a classic presentation of the estate’s terroir.  Please note that tours at Peter Michael are scheduled Monday through Friday. Subject to availability.

The history and grandeur of Kosta Browne Pinots goes back to its early days under the hands-on tutelage of founders Dan Kosta and Michael Browne and continues today.  Located in Sonoma’s famed Russian River Valley, Amber Ridge stands out in the minds of Pinot connoisseurs across the country and abroad.
Rated 96 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and with similar scores of the other mainstream critics, this bottling is one to remember. “Coming from the Russian River Valley and an estate vineyard that was purchased in 2012, the rich, gorgeously layered and textured 2014 Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch Vineyard offers an exotic fruit profile, with notions of cassis, passion fruit, spice and dried flowers all emerging from the glass. Full-bodied, layered and rich, yet with the purity and precision that’s present in all of these 2014s, drink bottles anytime over the coming decade, and I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see it keep for longer.” This Pinot Noir, according to Wine Spectator, “Gushes with fresh, snappy cherry, raspberry and wild berry flavors enlivened by zesty acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins. Offers a juicy, supple texture and striking velocity to the fruit flavors. Drink now through 2022.”
Tonight’s highest bidder is invited to bring a party of EIGHT to The Barlow in Sebastopol where you’ll enjoy a private multi-course dinner paired with an array of Kosta Browne’s acclaimed wines. Great ready for a surprise chef who will wow your senses with seasonal delights!  Valid to 12/31/20 at a mutually convenient time.

FIFTY couples are cordially invited to explore the privately owned, five-acre Houdini Estate in Los Angeles’ famed Laurel Canyon. Originally built in the Edwardian tradition in the early 1900s, the property still has caves, hidden tunnels, terraced gardens, and a deep-water tank where Harry Houdini reportedly practiced his underwater escapes. The secluded estate was the perfect retreat for America’s first action hero!

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the time Houdini and his wife, Bess, stayed at the Hollywood Hills estate while he made several films for the newly flourishing “picture business.” Houdini lived in the property’s guesthouse and used the estate’s pool to practice his amazing feats of escape and illusion. The magic and mystery of “The Handcuff King” remain with the grounds where Bess lived for years after he died in 1926 and in which she gave a famous party for 500 magicians.

The estate, its gardens, and a few smaller structures were partially restored after the 1959 Laurel Canyon Fire burned the original 54-room mansion. In 2006, José Luis Nazar purchased the property and lovingly restored the remaining structures and grounds, adding exotic plants to the century-old gardens, walking trails for exploration, exquisite statues and other artwork, and many amusing and whimsical touches. Guests will delight to discover a spring that runs year-round, hidden nooks and crannies featuring remnants of the original quarry on the property, magic tricks they can perform on specially commissioned structures, and photo opportunities galore on a property that is internationally renowned for fashion, music video, and other film shoots. Today, the estate enjoys modern amenities while maintaining the grand mystique and marvel of Harry Houdini. Come and discover magical surprises around every corner!

During this singular event hosted by José Luis Nazar, you will enjoy specially chosen wines of the “Old World, New World and Very New World” from Spain, Argentina and Mexico’s Parras Valley.  Included:
•          An array of Vega Sicilia wines from the entire portfolio as presented by Mike Miller and Golden State Wine Company, the exclusive USA importer of Vega Sicilia. Few wines have a history as distinguished as that of Vega Sicilia; today, the market for Vega Sicilia is one of scarcity and increasing demand. The wine’s growing fame and desirability is testament not only to the estate’s enduring legacy but to the world’s craving for wines of history and noble bearing.
•          A selection of Susana Balbo wines, courtesy of Folio Fine Wine Partners, a full-service importer and marketing agency that manages a collection of exceptional wines worldwide. After working for twenty years as a consulting winemaker, Susana founded her own brand in 2000. Over several decades of winemaking in Argentina, Susana has earned a reputation for a pioneering spirit and innovation. Her winemaking approach for the wines that bear her name is to seamlessly apply her human touch and enhance the grape’s innate character.
•          An in-depth tasting of Anclados wines from Valle de Parras, Mexico. This Valley, being the oldest wine region in the continent, has a privileged terroir and perfect weather conditions for production at an elevation of 5,577 ft.

Here we see the meeting of the old and new with Domaine Clarence Dillon and its famed estates in Bordeaux.
Château Haut-Brion in the Pessac-Leognan region is one of only five First Growths of Bordeaux and equally respected for its highly regarded Red as it is for its very rare trendsetting Blanc.  The 2015 is a blend of 69% Sauvignon Blanc and 31% Semillon but varies from year to year as Haut-Brion Blanc remains as one of the most highly regarded and most valuable white wines in the world.  On the commercial and auction markets it matches the greats of Burgundy in demand and price. The wine offers an ideal multilayered expression of flowers, citrus and white pitted fruits both on the nose and palate with an intriguing finish that will linger on forever.
Château Quintus, located in the charming area of St. Emilion on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, is Domaine Clarence Dillon’s newest acquisition. The estate was purchased by the Domaine in 2011, and in 2013 the neighboring estate of Château L’Arrosée was added.  The two properties are now united as Château Quintus. Proprietor Prince Robert of Luxembourg says, "This merger of equals will prove that the whole can be greater than the two parts. I am confident that this vineyard will soon come to rival its Domaine Clarence Dillon siblings as one of the finest wines of our region.”

1990 Château d’Yquem
1990 Château Latour
1990 Château Lafitte
1990 Château Haut-Brion
1990 Château Mouton Rothschild
1990 Château Margaux
1990 Château Cheval Blanc
1990 Château La Fleur-Pétrus
1990 Château Ducru Beaucailou
1990 Château Lynch-Bages
1990 Château Cos d’Estournel
1990 Château Montrose
1 bottle each (12 Total)
Horizontal Collection
1990 was the third year in a rare trifecta of great Bordeaux vintages that was not repeated until 2014, 2015 and 2016 with the wines currently on the market. But the "argument" over which of the three was "The Best" has raged on since the mid-1990s.  Unfortunately, the grace of 1988 fell behind the power of 1989 and the opulence of 1990.  For most of the decade, 1989 was getting more attention but for many, the interest has now shifted toward 1990.  Noted British wine authority Jancis Robinson writes, "…1990 is one of my favorite vintages and one whose wines are currently showing even better than the 1982s in many cases, [but] was not widely acknowledged until the late 1990s.”
The truly great vintages of the 20th Century such as 1928, 1947, 1949, 1961, 1982 as well as 1989 and 1990, were marked by very hot/dry summers. Some of the best of that group experienced welcome rainfall to cool things down before harvest.  Both climatic conditions occurred in 1989 and 1990, but most vintners agreed that 1990 held the edge with the timing of the rain that allowed better ripening and concentration.  Success with the 1990 vintage was achieved on both the Left and Right Banks as well as in Pessac-Leognan with wines expressing opulence, breadth on the palate, velvety texture and long complex finish.
This lot represents the best of what Bordeaux produced from the First Growths, highly regarded "Super Seconds" and fine examples from both Pomerol and St. Emilion.  A collector’s collection of the best that Bordeaux has to offer in what most would agree is one of the greatest vintages of the 20th Century.

Chef Claud Beltran and Lindy Novak, National Marketing Director of Spottswoode Winery will join Winemasters Co-chairmen Marcia and Gordy Kanofsky in their “newly reimagined” and stunning Tarzana home for an evening of wine and food seduction.  Nothing could be better than a famous guest chef creating a five-course meal for EIGHT (plus the Kanofskys) and a member of one of California’s most iconic wine families pouring an impressive array of Spottswoode’s most sought after wines.
After being mentored by Master Chef Thomas Keller, Chef Claud Beltran set out to make his own name.  For almost three decades, Claud has established himself as one of Los Angeles preeminent chefs.  In 2013, his extraordinary culinary talents were honored by his inclusion in the inaugural edition of Best Chefs America, the first-ever peer review guide of U.S. chefs.  Chef Beltran is co-owner and creator of Claud & Company, a catering company creating dinners, receptions, wedding parties, corporate picnics, barbecues, meetings and other events, from intimate wine dinners to large seasonally-themed festival parties.  Claud & Company also operates Bacchus’ Kitchen and Bacchus’ Kitchen Live, two of Pasadena’s hottest new restaurants.  Chef Beltran will guide a custom epicurean adventure matching an array of Spottswoode wines.
The Novak family has been growing wine grapes on their historic Spottswoode Estate since 1972 and making their own wines since 1982.  As stewards of their land, the family pursues an elegant, balanced, and age-worthy style that captures the character of the vintage and the complexity of their legendary estate vineyard.  In 1992, Lindy Novak joined her sister, Beth, as part of a dedicated second generation working alongside their mother, Mary, to guide Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery. In the more than 20 years since, Lindy has brought her own unique touch to her role as national director of marketing, by building loyal and lasting relationships with Spottswoode’s distributor, restaurant and retail partners. Known for her warmth, humor and thoughtfulness, Lindy oversees Spottswoode’s sales program in 47 states, and is an eloquent ambassador for Spottswoode and the Novak family at tastings, dinners and other key trade and consumer events throughout the country.

The 1990s ended with a bang as the outstanding 1999s hit the stage to rave reviews and was compared favorably to the knockout vintages of the decade such as, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996 and of course, 1997.  An amazing decade that my never be repeated in California’s North Coast or elsewhere in the world.  Totaling all the scores on the 1999s included in this collection by the most influential critics would be in the mid-1100 point range out of a possible 1200 points.  Quite an amazing fete but a showing not unexpected from the dedicated vintners and winemakers in an excellent vintage.  The range covers the Napa Valley from south to north and east to west with a bit of a jump past Calistoga to Knight’s Valley for a complete geological range of California’s finest Cabernet country.

Until his retirement in 2016, Paul Draper made the wines and oversaw the vineyards for Ridge, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, for almost 50 years.  Paul is universally recognized as one of the premier winemakers in the world and has received many honors for his expertise including being named Decanter magazine’s “Man of the Year.”  Paul’s philosophy has always been that the vineyard creates the wine, and every year he produced many single vineyard wines from numerous varietals and blends.  However, the kingpin of the vineyards – Monte Bello –surrounds the winery.  Ridge has been making wine from Monte Bello since 1962, and the character of the wines has always been unique, beautifully expressing the terroir.  The 1971 Monte Bello was thought to be too “light” in the winery.  But in 2006 it was named the grand winner in the 1976 Paris Tasting “Rematch” celebrating the 30th anniversary of this groundbreaking event. The 2015 Monte Bello has been greeted with great acclaim before and since its recent release.  James Suckling awarded it with 100 points followed by Anthony Galloni and others with 98 points and the Wine Advocate with 95+ points.  This rare 3.0L bottling will reward tonight’s winning bidder with what will surely be recognized in the upper echelon of California Cabernet Sauvignon collectibles.
